Temporary License for Pharmacy Technicians to Administer COVID-19 Vaccines

A message from CNYSHP President, Luke Probst, PharmD, BCPS

Dear Colleagues,

NYSCHP shared information earlier today containing guidance on the process for pharmacy technicians to become eligible to administer COVID-19 vaccines under supervision.

The statutory language is often confusing, so the attached Word document is an attempt to distill the formal PDF notice into a stepwise action plan.

Upstate pharmacy technicians who may be interested in pursuing this temporary licensure are encouraged to review and pursue this opportunity as one more differentiator in your skillset.  With the future prospects of COVID-19 vaccination efforts only escalating, your authorization to work in this capacity could serve you well in your professional advancement.

As a reminder, the formalization of the licensure process for pharmacy technicians in Article 28 facilities remains under development but is making progress.

Apologies in advance if you receive this via separate messages.

Best regards…

Luke

NYSCHP CDTM Practice During COVID-19 Pandemic Survey

Email from Andrew Kaplan, PharmD, BCPS, BCGP, Vice President of Public Policy

To perform CDTM in New York State requires the patient to provide a written consent; we are one of few states which require this.

With COVID-19 and the shift to telehealth, many patients may not be able to physically sign a consent document. Many patients in rural or low-income communities many not have access to fax machines, email, etc. We have heard concerns that the requirement that consent be written is a barrier to care.

NYSCHP has therefore requested the Governor use his executive authority to strike the “written” requirement for consent for CDTM during the pandemic. Click HERE to view the letter and other COVID-19 interventions taken by NYSCHP.

We would like to hear if this barrier has impacted you or any services you are aware of, in order to better quantify how prevalent the issue is in NYS and report this to the Governor.

2020 Virtual Residency Showcase

I will start off with the most important part – CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP and support our residents! Please note, the wrong time was listed on the previous post, this event is on June 10, 2020 from 6pm – 7pm. Our apologies for the error.

Every year, CNYSHP holds our Residency Showcase to give our area residents a forum to present their residency research projects. This year, while we cannot gather together in person, we will hold an equally important online Showcase. We are very pleased to offer 1 CE credit for FREE, just register! Come and show are residents the support they deserve after working very hard on their research this year.

COVID-19 Resources Page – New to CNYSHP.org

Given the rapid changing environment of the COVID-19 pandemic, health system pharmacists have been called upon in countless ways. CNYSHP has put together a page with links to resources that we find helpful and would like to share with our community. Should you have a resource that you would like to share, please contact Peter Aiello by clicking on this link. We will gladly post anything that may benefit another member of the CNYSHP community. Thank you for all that you do to keep our patients safe!
